So you've seen the ultrasound, you've told the people who needed to hear it first (or you're about to), and now it's time to tell the internet. The photo is usually the easy part. It's the caption that has people staring at a blinking cursor for 45 minutes.

Here's a big list of pregnancy announcement captions and quotes. There are funny ones, sweet ones, short ones, captions for a first baby, captions for announcing after infertility or IVF, captions that let your kids or pets break the news for you, and gender-neutral options. Copy one exactly, mash two together, or change a few words until it sounds like YOU. And first, a few quick tips, including why so many people wait until about 12 weeks to post.

A few tips before you post your pregnancy announcement

When to share the news

A lot of people wait until the end of the first trimester, around 12 weeks, to announce publicly. There's a real reason behind that habit: most miscarriages happen in the first trimester, so some people would rather be past that window before the whole internet knows.

But it's a habit, not a medical rule. Plenty of people tell a few close friends and family members early so they have support no matter what happens, then save the big public post for later. Other people share the same week they get a positive test, wait until after the anatomy scan, or never post at all. There's no wrong week to share your own news.

Pick your tone

Before you scroll through 90-something captions, it helps to know what kind of reaction you're going for. Do you want people laughing, crying, or just typing "congrats!!" and moving on with their day?

  • Funny: you'd rather joke about the nausea and the snacks

  • Sweet and sentimental: you want the heartfelt version

  • Short and simple: the photo is doing most of the talking

  • Gender-neutral or inclusive: you're keeping things open

The photo usually decides this for you. A picture of you holding a gallon jar of pickles is not the moment for a Thoreau quote.

Pregnancy announcement photo and video ideas

If you haven't planned the photo yet, these are classics for a reason:

  • An ultrasound picture or a bump photo

  • An older sibling or the family pet holding a sign ("Promoted to big sister!")

  • A flat lay of tiny shoes, a onesie or another first baby item

  • A seasonal setup, like a little pumpkin in the fall or an extra stocking at the holidays

  • A short reel or video reveal set to music

Then match the caption to the picture. A big-sibling photo goes perfectly with the sibling captions below, and a seasonal setup usually only needs a short line (the pumpkin is doing a lot of the work). If you want more ideas for the photo itself, I have a whole post of DIY pregnancy announcement ideas.

Give friends who are trying to conceive a heads-up

One more thing to think about before you post. If someone close to you is going through infertility (or you've been there yourself, so you know exactly what this feels like), finding out about a pregnancy by scrolling past it can be really hard, even when they're genuinely happy for you. A quick private text before the post goes up lets them have their first reaction privately and respond when they're ready. And don't take it personally if that response takes a little while.

Funny pregnancy announcement captions

Pregnancy is exciting. It's ALSO nausea, bloating, heartburn and crying at commercials, which is probably why funny captions are some of the most popular. These work for Instagram, Facebook or the family group chat.

  • "We tested positive… for parenthood!"

  • "Plot twist: I'm not just bloated."

  • "Bun in the oven. Fully preheated. 🍞"

  • "Current craving: pickles, ice cream and a 12-hour nap."

  • "Turns out it wasn't a food baby after all."

  • "Baby on board. Sleep has left the building."

  • "We made a human. Details to follow in [Month]."

  • "Snacking for two. Napping for three."

  • "Our last name is finally getting a sequel."

  • "Officially trading date nights for diaper nights."

  • "Coming soon: one tiny boss."

  • "Stretchy pants season has officially begun."

  • "I'm growing a person. Please hold the door."

Sweet and sentimental pregnancy announcement captions

If you'd rather go the sentimental route, these focus on the excitement and the love instead of the symptoms. They pair especially well with an ultrasound picture or a quiet bump photo.

  • "Our hearts are full, and so is my belly ❤️ Baby arriving [due date]."

  • "Love at first heartbeat. 💓"

  • "The tiniest feet make the biggest footprints on our hearts."

  • "A new adventure begins, and it's the best one yet."

  • "Already loved more than you'll ever know."

  • "Our favorite hello is coming in [Month]."

  • "Two hearts, and one more on the way."

  • "Our family is growing, and so is our love."

  • "Every day brings us closer to meeting you."

  • "The best is yet to come, and it's due in [Month]."

  • "Our hearts just got a little bigger."

  • "Some dreams come with tiny fingers and toes."

Short and simple pregnancy announcement captions

Sometimes the photo says everything and the caption just needs to stay out of the way. Short captions are also great on a letter board, a cake or a little handmade sign.

  • "Baby [Last name], coming [Month Year]."

  • "Baby loading… 50% complete."

  • "We're having a baby!"

  • "[Month Year] can't come soon enough."

  • "Party of three."

  • "Hello, baby."

  • "Our little one arrives in [Month]."

  • "Plus one."

  • "Baby on the way."

  • "New edition arriving [Month]."

  • "Coming soon."

  • "Expecting, and excited."

First pregnancy announcement captions

You're about to become a parent for the first time, and you have approximately zero idea what that's going to look like yet. These captions lean into that. And if you'd like a little help figuring it out week by week, I send a free week-by-week pregnancy email.

  • "Growing our family by two tiny feet."

  • "First came love, then came baby!"

  • "Mom in the making!"

  • "Our little miracle is on the way."

  • "Our biggest adventure starts in [Month]."

  • "Two became three… almost."

  • "The day we've been dreaming about is finally coming."

  • "New to this, and already in love."

  • "First baby, first heartbeat, first everything."

  • "We have no idea what we're doing, but we can't wait."

  • "Leveling up to parenthood."

  • "Parents in training. Wish us luck."

Pregnancy announcement captions after infertility or IVF

If getting here took a long time (and maybe a truly ridiculous number of appointments and needles), this announcement probably feels a little different. Some people want to celebrate the whole road out loud, and some would rather share the news without the backstory. These work either way:

  • "Worth every appointment, every needle and every wait."

  • "Hoped for, waited for, and finally on the way."

  • "After [number] years of waiting, our little one is coming in [Month]."

  • "Our IVF baby arrives [due date]!"

  • "It took a village (and a really good fertility clinic)."

  • "The longest wait for the best news."

  • "Some babies take the scenic route. Ours arrives in [Month]."

  • "Science, patience and a lot of hope. Baby due [Month]."

  • "We never stopped hoping."

  • "To everyone still waiting: we see you, and we're holding hope for you too."

And if you want to hear from someone who's been through it, I talked with Cathryn about her 18 months of fertility treatment (and her birth story) on the podcast.

Pregnancy announcement quotes

If you want something a little more polished than a caption, a quote works for an Instagram post, a printed announcement, or something you'll frame for the nursery later.

Funny pregnancy quotes

These are less "we're having a baby!" and more "here's what being pregnant is actually like," so they work for a bump update or a follow-up post too. And if you need more laughs, here are my favorite pregnancy memes.

  • "Pregnancy brain is real, and I forgot what I was going to say next."

  • "I'm not waddling. I'm walking with purpose."

  • "Some days I glow. Most days I sweat."

  • "My bladder and I are no longer on speaking terms."

  • "I used to have a lap."

  • "Nine months of heartburn for a lifetime of love. Worth it."

  • "Hormones: 1. Me: 0."

  • "I didn't know I could cry at a paper towel commercial. Now I do."

Sweet quotes for cards and keepsakes

For printed announcements, frames, or the first page of a baby book:

  • "Every child begins the world again." (Henry David Thoreau, Walden)

  • "A baby fills a place in your heart you never knew was empty."

  • "You are already my whole world, little one."

  • "The smallest people bring the biggest love."

  • "Before you were born, you were already loved."

  • "Our greatest adventure is just beginning."

  • "Some love stories start with a heartbeat."

Sibling and pet pregnancy announcement captions

Older siblings and pets make excellent spokespeople. They're adorable, they'll hold a sign (sometimes), and nobody's going to argue with them. Let them break the news:

  • "Promoted to big brother/sister!"

  • "Big sister in training."

  • "Retiring as an only child in [Month]."

  • "I'm going to be the boss of someone soon."

  • "Future best friend arriving soon."

  • "My human is having a baby!"

  • "Guard dog duties start [due date]. 🐶"

  • "Head of security reporting a new arrival in [Month]."

  • "The cat has not approved this, but it's happening anyway."

  • "Moving over to make room for one more."

Gender-neutral and inclusive pregnancy announcement captions

If you don't know the sex yet, you're keeping it a surprise, or you just want wording that fits any family, these keep things open:

  • "We're growing our family, and our hearts."

  • "Can't wait to meet you, baby."

  • "One tiny human, endless love."

  • "Baby on the way, and we couldn't be more grateful."

  • "Whoever you are, we already love you."

  • "A little one is on the way."

  • "Our family is getting one person bigger."

  • "Surprise! A new little human arrives in [Month]."

  • "Love makes a family, and ours is growing."

  • "Little one, we're so ready for you."

FAQs

Can I announce my pregnancy early?

Yes, absolutely. Waiting until about 12 weeks is common, but it's a personal choice, not a requirement (I explain why people wait in the tips above). Share when it feels right to you.

Should I share the baby's sex in my announcement?

That's totally up to you. Some people turn the pregnancy announcement into a sex reveal too, and others save that for its own moment. It also depends on when you find out. Some people find out from cell-free DNA screening, a blood test that can be done starting around week 10. Others find out at the anatomy ultrasound, usually around 18 to 20 weeks (assuming the baby cooperates). If you're announcing before you know, or you're staying team surprise, the gender-neutral captions above are your friend.

Do I need a photo for my pregnancy announcement?

Nope. A caption, a quote, or literally just a baby bottle emoji can do the job. The photo is a bonus.

Final thoughts

The best pregnancy announcement caption is the one that actually sounds like you. If you'd never say "our hearts are full" out loud, don't post it. And if a pickle joke feels more on brand, go with the pickle joke.

Grab your photo (bump, ultrasound, or a dog with absolutely no idea what's coming), pick a line, and post it whenever you're ready. Or keep it off the internet entirely. That's allowed too.
